Ukrainian troops blew up a cistern with nitric acid on the territory of the Zarya plant in the town of Rubezhnoye on the LPR territory, the LPR People’s Militia reported on April 5.

Video with the consequences of the explosion appeared in the media. The footage shows a huge cloud of brown nitrogen dioxide gas rising at the site of the explosion.

Nitrogen dioxide and nitric acid vapors are poisonous and cause burns to the respiratory organs, eyes and skin. Acid rain occurs as a result of the precipitation of this chemical substance.

For protection against nitrogen dioxide and nitric acid vapor, conventional gas masks provide poor protection. Wet cloth masks soaked in soda or soap solution can be used for basic respiratory protection. To protect the eyes, sealed goggles are used. Alkaline solutions are also used for skin treatment.
