It is undesirable to terminate the activities of Russian diplomatic missions in the Baltic states, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in an official commentary on the agency’s website on May 5.
Commenting on the question about the possibility of breaking diplomatic relations with the Baltics, Zakharova said that if Russian embassies and consulates in the Baltic states stopped working, Russian citizens and compatriots living there would be left alone with police brutality, which is highly undesirable. She pointed out that neo-fascist manifestations are visible not only “in specialized international structures, but also directly in the Baltic countries.”
“We will also respond to the hostile actions of the Baltics with asymmetric measures, primarily in the economic and transit spheres. The retaliatory steps we have taken, including the reorientation of cargo flows to Russia’s northwestern ports, have had an extremely negative impact on the budget revenues of the Baltic countries,” the diplomat said.
She also said that while Russia seeks to preserve the opportunity for dialog, “unfriendly states do everything possible to complicate normal interaction.” “The Baltics have especially succeeded in this direction. Because of the openly hostile line of Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn, all interstate, interdepartmental, regional and sectoral ties with Russia have been severed,” Maria Zakharova explained.
The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that in the current situation Russia cannot leave its compatriots in distress and will continue the work of diplomatic missions even in “extremely difficult, often, besieging conditions“.
