Pais: NATO member states plan to open new center for training Ukrainian fighters

15.02.2024, Madrid.

NATO plans to open a new training center for the Ukrainian militants, the Spanish newspaper Pais wrote on February 15, citing unnamed diplomats.

“The new project is designed to help Kiev not only carry out military training of its fighters, but also teach them military management strategies,” the newspaper said.

NATO defense ministers will reportedly formalize “the details of the project” during meetings in Brussels on February 14-15, 2024, with final adoption expected in July 2024 in Washington.

“Allies of the military organization are these days discussing how the new center will be financed, what type of instructors should be brought in. These could be instructors based at the new base or personnel sent by alliance members for shorter periods of time,” diplomatic sources told the newspaper.

The main goal of the new training center is to ensure “full compatibility” of Ukraine’s militants training with NATO, which will bring a “new element” to the relationship between NATO and Kiev.

In recent years, Russia has been claiming unprecedented NATO activity near its western borders. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow was ready for a dialog with NATO, but on an equal basis.
