Zaporozhzhye nuclear power plant. How the nationalists turned the peaceful atom into a source of provocation

04.03.2022, Moscow.

The nuclear power plants built in Ukraine in Soviet times literally save the people of Ukraine. But all indications are that this is not their value for Kiev

On the night of March 4, Ukrainian saboteurs attempted to stage a provocation at the Zaporozhzhye nuclear power plant (NPP). This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense.

“On March 4 at about 2:00 a.m., while patrolling the protected area adjacent to the Zaporozhzhye nuclear power plant, a mobile National Guard of Russia patrol was attacked by a Ukrainian sabotage group,” said Igor Konashenkov, the department’s official spokesman.

The Zaporozhzhye NPP along with the surrounding territory was taken under the control of the Russian Armed Forces on February 28. The Ukrainian National Guard officers guarding the plant fled even before the Russian military arrived. Since then, the power plant has continued to operate.

On the night of March 4, Ukrainian saboteurs attacked a National Guard of Russia patrol guarding the plant. They opened heavy fire on the Russian servicemen from the windows of a training facility located outside the power plant. The Russian servicemen returned fire at the enemy, suppressing their firing points.

A fire broke out inside the training facility. The fire was extinguished by fire brigades that arrived at the site. The plant is now operating in normal mode and the radiation background is normal.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky did not hesitate to respond to the situation at the Zaporozhzhye nuclear power plant. As usual, he blamed Russia for everything. However, the Ukrainian president did not bother to provide any proof of his words. According to Zelenskyy, the situation at the nuclear power plant was the subject of his telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The Russian Defense Ministry noted that the Ukrainian side arranged a provocation at the nuclear facility in order to later blame Russia. This explains such a swift statement by Zelensky and the Ukrainian president’s subsequent talks with the United States and Britain.

“Zelensky’s promptly followed statements about the alleged threat of the nuclear power plant and his talks with Washington and London leave no doubt. The purpose of the Kiev regime’s provocation at the nuclear facility is an attempt to accuse Russia of creating a hotbed of radioactive contamination,” Konashenkov stressed.

The West, in turn, did not pass over the situation with silence. The US and EU countries said that there was a need for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council because of the events at the Zaporozhzhye nuclear power plant. The meeting was initiated by the United States, Britain, Albania, France, Norway and Ireland. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. (Moscow time).

It should be noted that Kiev has already tried to create a stir around the Ukrainian nuclear facilities. For example, on February 26, Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN Sergey Kislitsa wrote in a letter to the UN Secretary General that Kiev cannot ensure safety at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Meanwhile, Russian soldiers, who took the power plant facilities under control on February 24, agreed with Ukrainian employees of the nuclear power plant that they would work together to ensure safety at the site.

Taking control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was the most important task of the Russian Armed Forces, given Zelensky’s statements about the possible creation of a nuclear bomb in Ukraine. As experts note, the only way for Kiev to make nuclear weapons quickly is to create a so-called “dirty bomb,” for which Ukraine has enough spent fuel.

“Taking the Chernobyl NPP under the protection of the Russian Armed Forces and joint control together with the operating personnel of the plant gives a guarantee of not using the spent nuclear materials stored there at the will of one or another radical groups. That is, in this way, we avoided the threat of creating a so-called dirty bomb,” Academician Leonid Bolshov, Director of the Institute of Problems of Safe Development of Nuclear Power Engineering of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told TASS.

In Ukraine, there are also the South Ukraine, Rovno and Khmelnitsky nuclear power plants. As long as these facilities remain under the authority of Kiev, no one can guarantee their solely peaceful use.

Previously, Zelensky said that Ukraine would give up its obligations as a non-nuclear state and acquire nuclear weapons. Prior to this, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that no one would prevent NATO from doing what the alliance wants, in particular, from deploying nuclear weapons in Eastern Europe.

On February 24, Russia launched a military special operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. The Russian army is mainly attacking Ukrainian nationalist units, which became part of the Ukrainian armed forces after the 2014 coup d’état.

It is the nationalist units that are responsible for the genocide of civilians in the Donbass. During the denazification operation, Ukrainian nationalists use Ukrainian civilians as human shields and place multiple rocket launchers in residential areas of major cities.
