NATO forces’ attempt to remove chemical weapons sunk in the Baltic Sea could lead to a catastrophe, Sergey Belyaev, director of the Foreign Ministry’s Second European Department, said, RIA Novosti informed on November 24.
Russia is concerned about the increased activity of Western countries around chemical weapons in the Baltic Sea.
“We are convinced that discussion of this kind of issues should be conducted at the relevant international platforms, first of all – in the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM),” Belyaev said.
He emphasized that the discussion should consider the opinion of Russia and “other countries – allies in the anti-Hitler coalition.” In addition, economic risks should be taken into account.
The diplomat recalled that due to Western sanctions, the full-fledged activity of HELCOM is actually paralyzed. He emphasized that uncoordinated actions could negatively affect the entire region.
