Kiev approves in first reading the law banning the UOC MP in Ukraine

19.10.2023, Kiev.

The activities of religious organizations affiliated with Russia will be banned in Ukraine, the press service of the Verkhovnaya Rada of Ukraine said in its Telegram account on October 19.

The press service said that the bill providing for this ban was passed by the Rada in the first reading.

The press service explained that the largest religious organization in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) of the Moscow Patriarchate, falls under the scope of this bill.

The leadership of the UOC declared its independence from the Russian Orthodox Church after Russian Federation army units crossed the borders of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, but did not declare that the UOC had become an autocephalous church.
