The frigates and corvettes of the Russian Navy being built and laid down will be armed with Tsirkon hypersonic missiles, Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolay Yevmenov told RIA Novosti on June 22.

“Frigate-type ships under construction and being laid down will be armed with Tsirkons. Corvettes too,” the agency quotes Yevmenov as saying.

At the same time, the Kalibr and Onyx missiles, which have proven their effectiveness, remain in the fleet’s armament, the admiral added.

Speaking to journalists at the 11th International Naval Show, the Navy Commander-in-Chief announced the necessity of the soonest possible construction of warships.

In August, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the beginning of serial production of the Zirkon missiles. In January, the minister announced that the Project 22350 frigate Admiral Gorshkov, armed with these missiles, had entered combat service.

The head of the Russian defense ministry said that the Zirkon missiles are able to reliably penetrate any modern and advanced air defense and missile defense systems.
