The American Conservative: Ukrainians are trying to “derussify Russian art”

11.06.2023, USA.

Ukrainian activists in the US are trying to “derussify” Russian art, said Katie Sedgwick, author of The American Conservative (TAC), in an article posted on its website on June 10.

The journalist drew attention to the fact that over the past year, immigrants from Ukraine have intensified attempts to correct online databases, and they have also begun to apply more frequently to Western museums with requests to attribute Ukrainian nationality to Russian, Jewish, and Polish artists. Thus, the artist Andy Warhol, whose family is from the Carpathian Mountains, came to the attention of the activists.

It is noted that among the activists the most notable one is Oksana Semenik, who calls on her followers in Twitter to request museums to correct the biographies of artists.

Semenik said in an interview that indicating Russia as the birthplace of artists is “Russian propaganda“. According to the activist, her goal is to “liberate and decolonize Ukrainian culture from its Russian context.”

Sedgwick said artists Zinaida Serebryakova, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Ivan Aivazovsky, and Ilya Repin were such “targets.”
