The order to put the deterrence forces on special combat duty was made to cool down the hotheads in the West so that there would be no thought of attacking our army in Ukraine, military expert Igor Korotchenko, editor in chief of the National Defense magazine, said in a commentary for Rossa Primavera News Agency.
“As Putin said, there were statements from certain Western leaders with threats against Russia. Obviously, in order to send a certain signal to these countries and these leaders, such a decision was made,” the military expert noted.
Korotchenko noted that the statement was made publicly and televised, which gives it the character of a warning. According to the expert, the president made it clear “that if you expect to commit aggression against Russian troops in Ukraine or against the Russian Federation, we can respond to your attack with strikes on corresponding target coordinates in different countries. Both with the possibility of nuclear defeat and in the non-nuclear variant,” Korotchenko explained.
“We are talking about retaliatory measures, retaliatory strike measures,” the expert stressed.
The expert also explained that Russia has not only nuclear deterrence forces. The country’s arsenal also includes strategic non-nuclear means. “In particular, these are sea- and air-based missiles with conventional warheads, but also capable of striking at a distance, including intercontinental range.”
Earlier, at a meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered that the deterrence forces be put on special alert.
