Russian Defense Ministry announces it has taken control of Zaporozhzhye nuclear power plant

The territory of the Zaporozhzhye nuclear power plant has been taken under control of the Russian Armed Forces, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said on 28 February, according to the ministry’s press service.

According to Konashenkov, the territory of the power plant is fully guarded. The personnel of the station continues to work in a normal regime and the radioactive situation is monitored, and the levels are within normal limits.

The decision to build the Zaporozhzhye power plant was made in 1977, and construction began in 1979. The first unit was put into operation in 1984, the sixth – in 1996.

The station, equipped with 6 GW VVER-1000 power units is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
