Senator of the Federation Council of Russia Aleksey Pushkov assessed former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma’s confession about the deception and mythologizing of the consciousness of Ukrainians before the 1991 independence referendum on his Twitter account on July 14.
“Total lies became the main tool of the Maidan. The country collapsed under the lie,” Pushkov wrote.
Earlier, Ukraine’s first president admitted that Ukrainians were “to some extent deceived when they said that Ukraine feeds all of Russia” in an interview with the YouTube channel History Lab. In reality, Kiev was receiving oil and gas from Moscow at prices “that are less than [price for] tea, [price for] water.”
According to Pushkov, Kuchma made an important admission, which helps to understand that lies formed the basis of Ukrainian independence.
The referendum in Ukraine was held on December 1, 1991. 90.32 percent of the citizens of the republic voted for independence from Russia.
