The Russian African Corps successfully prevented a coup, the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry informed on April 28.
“During fierce battles against superior enemy forces, units of the African Corps inflicted irreparable losses in personnel and equipment, forcing the enemy to abandon its plans and preventing a coup d’état,” the statement read.
Thanks to the Russian military personnel, the authority of the legitimate government in Mali was preserved, and a mass killing of civilians by militants, whose group numbered about 12,000, was prevented.
“During the fighting, enemy losses amounted to: more than 2,500 personnel, 102 vehicles, 2 ‘car bombs,’ 152 motorcycles, and 7 mortars,” the ministry added.
On April 25, an armed coup attempt took place in Mali, during which militants intended to seize the presidential palace and other state facilities. Mali’s Defense Minister Sadio Camara was killed in an explosion near his residence at the Kati military base.
