A declaration adopted at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro covers 126 points and includes positions on Ukraine, Iran, Gaza, and artificial intelligence, according to the document published on the official website on July 7.
The 45-page document, signed by the leaders of BRICS member-states, outlines agreed positions on key international issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, the situation in Gaza, military actions in Sudan, and attacks on Iranian territory. The leaders expressed concern over the threat of nuclear conflict and called for diplomatic resolution of regional disputes in accordance with international law.
During the summit, representatives of the member countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and the new members — explored paths to resolving pressing global crises. Particular attention was given to the crises in Gaza and Iran, as well as conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan, and Syria.
The leaders also addressed climate-related threats and opposed imposing climate taxes on countries. They emphasized the importance of joint efforts to tackle global demographic challenges and improve access to healthcare, including medication provision.
A major focus was on economic issues: development of a BRICS grain exchange, energy market stability, cross-border payments, and reducing dependence on unilateral trade measures. Other topics included the external debt of developing countries and strengthening the New Development Bank as a tool for financing.
BRICS participants expressed their intention to engage in global AI governance, highlighting the importance of ethical standards and cooperation with the UN. Initiatives in space technology were also presented, including the proposal to establish a BRICS Space Council aimed at harnessing the peaceful potential of the sector.
BRICS reaffirmed its commitment to expanding and deepening dialogue with civil society. The declaration also covered measures to combat international terrorism, the repatriation of cultural heritage, and enhancing the bloc’s role on the global stage. According to the official communiqué, the next summit will take place in 2026.
