Talks about a coalition between the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) are taking place, confirmed AfD chairman Tino Chrupalla, Bild wrote on July 3.
The parliamentary boycott of the right-wing party has been broken — first in the federal state of Thuringia and now at the national level, said Chrupalla. When initially asked whether he was ready for talks with Sahra Wagenknecht, he answered unequivocally, “Yes, always,” later adding that “talks with BSW are already taking place.” He was vague about the content of these confidential discussions, stating only that they concern “what drives Germany and how we can change the majority.”
The starting point for negotiations between AfD and BSW was Thuringia, where BSW’s regional branch entered into a coalition with the local CDU following regional parliamentary elections in September 2024. Although BSW leader Wagenknecht expressed disapproval of the Thuringian coalition, no personnel changes followed. This was followed by BSW’s defeat in the federal elections in February 2025.
On July 2, German media reported a meeting between Frank Augsten, head of BSW’s Thuringia branch, and Björn Höcke [known for his far-right views – translator’s note], leader of the Thuringia branch of the AfD.
