During the Tiananmen Square protests, Deng Xiaoping acted in a diametrically opposite way to Mikhail Gorbachev, who betrayed the ideals of his predecessors during perestroika, philosopher, political scientist, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on May 16 on the Conversation with a Sage program on the Zvezda radio channel.
Discussing the Russian-Chinese rapprochement, Sergey Kurginyan emphasized that one should not underestimate the nature of Deng Xiaoping’s actions during the Tiananmen Square protests. Deng Xiaoping did not betray the cause of his predecessors, those who built communist China, despite the “remarkable ecstasy regarding relations between the US and China developed by Kissinger” that took place at the time.
According to the political scientist, when the Chinese leader of the youth masses in Tiananmen Square came to Deng Xiaoping, the latter told him something like this, “I am a tired old man, and you are the young generation. You will come to power; take these people off the square now and your career will have a great start” But the protest leader refused to lead people off the streets and demanded that Deng Xiaoping capitulate.
“When this youth leader left, Deng Xiaoping called the military commanders, and said: ‘Go ahead! — and they crushed all these masses. And if a shot was heard from a building, then a tank demolished this building and that was the end of it, because a tank cannot enter the city and stand still, it, then, becomes an easy target,” the leader of the Essence of Time movement said.
“In other words, the Chinese acted in a diametrically opposite way in comparison to Gorbachev, it was solved once and for all,” he concluded.
