Issues of biological security are becoming increasingly acute due to global instability and lack of progress on the Biological Weapons Convention, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on June 10 in an address to participants of a conference in Sochi.
The leader of state noted that the event brought together representatives of government agencies, scientific centers, and international organizations from 30 countries. “Meetings in this format are becoming more high-profile each year, which confirms their growing authority,” Putin emphasized.
The conference is dedicated to global threats in the field of biosecurity and the search for solutions. The event was attended by leaders of government agencies, scientific institutions, medical centers, and public associations from various countries, as well as delegates from a number of international organizations.
In recent years, the topic of biological security has been actively discussed at the international level. In 2022, Russia repeatedly accused the US of violating the Biological Weapons Convention by financing biolaboratories in Ukraine. The West dismissed these allegations as disinformation.
Additionally, in 2024, the WHO warned of the risks of new pandemics due to the rise of zoonotic infections and climate change. This has intensified discussions on the need for global biosecurity measures, including updating international norms and strengthening oversight of research in this field.
