Zelensky compares refusal to take Ukraine into NATO to the USA’s fleeing from Afghanistan

18.02.2025, Kiev.

The issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO cannot simply be “taken off the table” so as not to get a new Afghanistan, when someone inconsiderately self-dismisses, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said regarding US President Donald Trump’s skeptical remarks on the subject in an interview with German TV channel ARD on February 18.

You can’t just take it off the table. It doesn’t work that way. I believe that no one is interested in Afghanistan 2.0,” he said about Ukraine’s membership in NATO.

Zelensky reminded the US of their experience of ill-conceived termination and very quick self-dismissal in Afghanistan. He also re-emphasized that Kiev is not ready to give up its lost territories and does not intend to do so legally.

Earlier, Trump supported Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth’s statement that Ukraine’s admission to NATO was unlikely. Trump called a mistake that caused the escalation of the conflict, the corresponding promises to Kiev of the previous US President Joe Biden.
