Russia is not satisfied with the proposals made by the team of US President-elect Donald Trump regarding Ukraine, stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on December 29 in an interview with TASS.
Lavrov noted that the proposals include delaying Ukraine’s NATO membership for 20 years and introducing “British and European peacekeeping forces” into the country.
“Russia’s principled position on the settlement is well-known. President Putin repeatedly stated it, including during the year-end press conference on December 19,” he said.
The Russian Foreign Minister added that Moscow has not received any “official signals from Washington regarding the Ukrainian settlement,” which, until Trump’s inauguration in January, are only available to the current administration of Joe Biden.
Lavrov mentioned that according to media reports and Trump’s interview with Time on December 12, the proposals involve attempting to “freeze” the hostilities along the current confrontation line and transfer the responsibility for the confrontation with Russia to Europe.
“Of course, we are not satisfied with the proposals being voiced by representatives of the president-elect’s team,” Lavrov emphasized.
On November 5, presidential elections were held in the USA, which former President Donald Trump won. The inauguration is scheduled for January 20. During the campaign, Trump claimed he could resolve the Ukrainian conflict within 24 hours of taking office.
On June 14, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine is possible under several conditions, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian Armed Forces from the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions within their administrative borders.
Additionally, Ukraine must become a neutral, non-aligned, and non-nuclear state. The country should undergo demilitarization and denazification. The status of Crimea, Sevastopol, Kherson, and Zaporozhye as Russian regions must be fixed in international treaties. Western sanctions must be lifted.
