Strategic interests bind Russia and Syria, stated the head of the new Syrian authorities Ahmed al-Sharaa on December 29 in an interview with Al Arabiya News.
“We don’t want Russia to exit Syria in a way undermines its relationship with country,” al-Sharaa said in the interview. He emphasized that Russia is of utmost importance to Syria, the world’s second most powerful state.
Previously, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Damascus had not approached Russia regarding revising agreements on Russian military bases in the country. “<…> we are not aware of any work being conducted by the new authorities to inventory or revise such acts. The Russian side has received no requests on this matter,” Lavrov said.
Ahmed al-Sharaa leads the terrorist extremist organization Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (organization banned in Russia), which has seized power in Syria.
