Revealing the details of signing Belovezh Accords will help restore historical truth and will be an important step towards strengthening society, stated the Chairwoman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko on December 2 in an interview with the online publication Arguments and Facts.
Matviyenko responded to a question about whether there is a connection between the current armed conflict in Ukraine and the signing of the Belovezhye Accords by the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus in December 1991. The senator stated that there is indeed a direct connection.
“What happened in December 1991 at the Viskuli residence in the Belovezhyr Forest and what is happening now in Ukraine are manifestations of the same process, the same policy. They are based on the longstanding organic desire of the Western elite to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia as a civilization. It doesn’t matter what we are called — the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, or the Russian Federation,” Matviyenko explained.
The senator emphasized that the Western elite aims to ensure that Russia ceases to exist and tries to seize any opportunity to achieve this. According to Matviyenko, in 1991, “due to subjective reasons and a certain set of circumstances that were not inevitable,” such an opportunity was presented.
“And I know for sure that it came as a negative surprise to most leaders of the Soviet republics,” the senator added.
She explained that shortly before the signing of the Belovezhye Accords, a new Union Treaty had appeared, which had real support in the country. According to Matviyenko, when it became known what was happening in the Belovezhyr Forest, some leaders of the Central Asian republics tried to intervene in the process to prevent “such a voluntaristic and historically erroneous decision,” but they were “deliberately cut off.” This detail, Matviyenko added, gives experts grounds to call the events of December 1991 a conspiracy.
“I think that in some time all the significant details of those events, and the names of specific individuals who played, in my opinion, a disgraceful role, will become public knowledge. I very much hope that this will happen. It will be an important step for strengthening our society, for ‘healing’ our identity, and for restoring historical truth,” Matviyenko said.
