Citizens of Ireland refuse to change the definition of family

10.03.2024, Ireland.

A referendum changing the definition of family has failed in Ireland, the country’s Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said, The Irish Times reported March 10.

Lawmakers had proposed including “strong and lasting” relationships instead of marriage in the definition of family. It was also proposed to remove the clause on the main role of women in the household, replacing it with the statement of the importance of family members in general.

At the end of the referendum, 67% of Irish citizens voted against the changes.

The Prime Minister said that only the government was responsible for the result of the vote. He added that the attendance was quite high.
