Suez Canal revenues halved due to Houthi attacks

08.03.2024, Cairo.

Attacks by Yemen’s Houthis have caused a 50% drop in Suez Canal revenues, Egyptian Finance Minister Mohamed Maait told Sada El Balad TV on March 7.

The Suez Canal generated record profits of $9.4 billion in the 2022-2023 fiscal year. However, attacks by Yemeni rebels on commercial ships in the Red Sea forced shipowners to seek ways to bypass the Suez Canal.

The Houthis began attacking ships in the Red Sea in connection with Israel’s military operation in Palestine.

Yemeni rebels say they support the Palestinians and intend to continue operations against Western commercial ships until Israel ends hostilities in Palestine.
