The Krasnopol guided shells used by Russian artillerymen increase the survivability of howitzers, Viktor Murakhovsky, a military analyst and editor-in-chief of the Arsenal of Fatherland magazine, told RIA Novosti on February 17.

Murakhovsky said that artillery units must change their position as soon as possible after striking the enemy to avoid retaliatory fire. Guided projectiles make it possible to hit the target faster, and thus to change location, the analyst noted.

“In this case, the time of firing is minimized – as a rule, only one guided projectile is enough to hit the target surely,” Murakhovsky explained.

In an article in his journal, the expert also identified factors that increase the position change rate for howitzers using unguided shells. In these cases, the speed of hitting the target is increased due to the higher technical speed of firing and the accuracy of guidance of the installations, which allows striking without prior firing. Also important is the coherence of the combat teams, which allows the howitzer to be prepared for changing the location more quickly.
