Prime Minister: Finland will not deploy nuclear weapons

19.02.2024, Warsaw.

Finland is not going to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory, the country’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said in an interview with Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita on February 19.

Orpo said that NATO already provides nuclear deterrence, so the deployment of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory is not required. Nuclear weapons already deployed in other countries are sufficient for this purpose.

Meanwhile, Finland is preparing to provide deterrence with conventional weapons – as a new NATO member state.

As a reminder, the Polish authorities have recently expressed their desire to deploy US nuclear weapons on their territory. This is possible within the framework of Nuclear Sharing programs.

In May 2022, Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO after Russia’s military special operation in Donbass. Turkey and Hungary took the longest time to consider the applications of Scandinavian countries to join the alliance.

As a result, Finland’s application was approved and Finland became a member of the alliance. The Swedish application has been approved by Turkey only now. Hungary has not approved the Swedish application so far.
