German writer: Big capitalists make a huge profit from wars

14.12.2023, Berlin.

Western capitalists are the main beneficiaries of the military conflict in Ukraine, writer Werner Rügemer said in an article for the Neue Rheinische Zeitung published on December 14.

The author of the book The Capitalists of the 21st Century argues that protracted wars are beneficial to big capital. According to the author, huge profits come not only from the combat itself, but also from the restoration of the affected territories.

“Wars are a profitable business, and the longer they last and the more destruction they bring – the more profitable is the ‘reconstruction’ after the war, which at the same time is already being prepared. The same is happening now with the militarily hopeless US proxy war against Russia,” Rügemer said.

The writer believes that the close interaction between capitalists and the military is characteristic of colonial and neo-colonial imperialism.

Today, according to the writer, the most aggressive neocolonial policy with a global scope is pursued by the United States.

Rügemer highlights the company BlackRock, which is one of the largest shareholders of the ten largest US defense companies, as well as the German defense company Rheinmetall. The writer also notes that BlackRock, with the approval of the US and EU governments, will have to coordinate the “reconstruction” of Ukraine after the end of hostilities. However, in the writer’s opinion, “restoration” will mean preparations for a new war against Russia.
