Former German President Joachim Gauck blames Russians for high ratings of right-wing AfD party

Former German President Joachim Gauck made Russophobic statements blaming Russia for the right-wing AfD party’s high ratings among East Germans on July 18 on the Markus Lanz talk show on ZDF television.

According to Gauck, “evil Russian communists” imposed an “alien way of life” on Germans in the GDR. The politician believes that this is the reason why East Germans vote for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

The reason is that East Germans have absorbed the values of the Russians. At the same time, the former president claims that the AfD has no chance to form a government in Germany.

“These guys will never come to power in Germany,” the 83-year-old pastor said on the Markus Lanz talk show. Gauck explained that the AfD’s growing popularity is not a political problem, but a psychological one.

“In every country there is a group of people who are psychologically arranged in such a way that they seek leadership rather than participation. These people prefer an authoritarian way of life,” the politician explained.

Editorial Comment

The right-wing AfD party gains popularity throughout Germany, not only in the former GDR. This rising popularity is, first and foremost, caused by the German authorities’ disastrous economic and social policy. If this policy is not reconsidered, the outcomes can be catastrophic.
