Russian General Staff: Russian Armed Forces will create two armies, two military districts and other formations

02.06.2023, Moscow.

Colonel General Yevgeny Burdinsky, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, announced the establishment of two armies, an army corps, a new naval region, five divisions, 26 brigades, and two military districts in the Armed Forces of Russia at the gathering of senior officers. His speech was published on May 25 in the Russian Defense Ministry’s Military Commissariats of Russia magazine.

“In 2023, it is necessary to timely carry out organizational and staffing support for the formation of the combined arms and air armies, army corps, Azov naval district, five divisions and 26 brigades, and the creation of the Moscow and Leningrad military districts,” Burdinsky said.

He says that tasks are immense, but they should be done in a short time. Apart from manning the formations, it is necessary to provide their deployment, supply of armament and other means. Also “complete and qualitative assignment of mobilization resources” should be organized.

Burdinsky emphasizes that to improve recruitment offices’ work and attract qualified specialists there, it is necessary to transfer employees to the civil service. It is also necessary to achieve retention of employees with many years of experience and high-quality of service.

At the end of 2022, Burdinsky said that mobilization activities of such a scale, which the military registration and enlistment offices faced, had not happened since the Great Patriotic War. He noted two identified problems: the unpreparedness of parts of society to perform military duty and difficulties with the logistical support of the mobilized and their accommodation.

“At the same time, many volunteers, without waiting for a summons, presented themselves at the military registration and enlistment offices,” Burdinsky added.

In December 2022, Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Sergey Shoigu said that the Russian army should be increased to 1.5 million people, of which 695,000 contract servicemen should be.
