Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Director: US trains Islamists in Syria to undermine stability

30.05.2023, Moscow.

The United States trains ISIL militants (organization banned in Russia) at its base in Syria, Sergey Naryshkin, director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), said on May 30.

“Washington makes no secret of its irritation with Syria’s successes and would like to reverse the emerging trends,” he stressed.

Naryshkin noted that the USA plans to use Islamists, which it calls the “moderate opposition,” again for its own purposes. This activity is coordinated at the American military base Et-Tanf near Syria’s borders with Jordan and Iraq.

Dozens of ISIL militants (organization banned in Russia) are trained there. Their numbers are constantly growing – the Americans bring militants to the camp from prisons in territories under their control.

US intelligence agencies are monitoring the militants’ sorties into Syria in real time. The cynicism of US curators is impressive, Naryshkin noted. “Among the priority targets are places of mass gathering of people, stores and state institutions,” he stressed.

The USA is outraged about Syria’s return to the Arab League and is trying to destabilize the situation in the region. However, it won’t succeed, stressed the SVR head.
