Politicians in Germany create a petition against Wagenknecht and Schwarzer’s call for peace

21.02.2023, Berlin.

German politicians of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union of Germany) party issued a petition against the call for peace by the member of Die Linke party Sahra Wagenknecht and women’s rights activist Alice Schwarzer, the magazine Der Spiegel wrote on February 21.

CDU party politician Roderich Kiesewetter, together with several scientists, created a petition titled “Give up Ukraine now? Not in our name!”. With this petition, Kiesewetter responded to the “Manifesto for Peace”, which was made public by women’s rights activist Alice Schwarzer and Die Linke (left-wing) politician Sahra Wagenknecht.

Wagenknecht and Schwarzer called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to “stop the escalation of arms deliveries” to Ukraine and warned that it could lead to a nuclear disaster. Wagenknecht and Schwarzer called on German citizens to demonstrate in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

Kiesewetter, for his part, declares that peace at all costs and peace without freedom is not peace. “Those who think that if we give up Ukraine now, we will wake up in peace tomorrow are wrong,” the politician writes in his petition.

Professor Joachim Krause of the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University and former FDP (Free Democratic Party) MP Hildebrecht Braun were among the first to sign Kiesewetter’s petition.

Wagenknecht’s call for a rally for peace was not supported by all representatives of Die Linke (left-wing party). The federal executive committee of the party did not openly call on fellow citizens to hold a rally in front of the Brandenburg Gate. Thuringia’s Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow distanced himself from Wagenknecht’s statements.

The Land Union of the Left in Bavaria and the District Union of the Left in Berlin-Mitte supported Wagenknecht and Schwarzer’s manifesto. Berlin’s cultural senator, left-wing politician Klaus Lederer, explicitly called for another event in front of the Brandenburg Gate. He called for a rally against the policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
