Kurginyan explains what real sovereignty is for post-Soviet countries

15.03.2022, Moscow.

After the disintegration of the USSR, the countries did not achieve independence, but they entered the sphere of influence of other countries that are hostile towards Russia, said philosopher, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement on the Right to Know! program on the TVC channel.

According to the political scientist, after the disintegration of the USSR the parts of the country, which formally became independent, immediately came under the influence of other states. This means that as soon as they left one imperial entity they immediately entered the orbit of other states and their alliances. Similar to planets driven by gravity, states move in a political space being repelled from something and attracted to something else according to their “weights” on the globe, Kurginyan believes.

“They said, ‘Well, the Soviet Union will fall apart, and there will be these republics…’ I replied, ‘But they are not pieces of sausage to stay on the plate where they were cut. This is not the way it happens.’ There are absolutely different laws ruling the world,” the political scientist explained referring to the gravitational astronomy laws as an example.

“Of course, some people believed that a sovereign Armenia, on an equal basis with the USA, would dictate the world what it must be. However, in the pre-Soviet period it suffered massacres from either the Turks or the Persians. And it could not even choose between the two,” the political scientist reminded.

According to Kurginyan, independence is a good thing to advocate for, but the fact is that the former Central Asian republics of the USSR are in the spheres of interests of China, Afghanistan, Turkey, the USA, and Russia. Their fate will eventually depend on the choice they make. The political scientist pointed out how soon the Baltic States lost their sovereignty becoming part of the EU and NATO.

“So, what happened to Ukraine as soon as its sovereignty was declared? The question [emerged] to whom it should go, whom it should give itself up to, but not at all how to unleash its great independence according to romantic traditions. It became clear very quickly that it had to give itself up to the West,” the political scientist concluded, adding that various centers of power exist inside the West, and competition between them is ongoing.

According to Kurginyan, the Ukrainian culture can only unleash its potential in full when it is linked with the Russian culture, as it happened in its golden age.
