Experts explain why the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is not transmitting monitoring data

10.03.2022, Moscow.

The automated radiation monitoring system (ARMS) of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is working, but the data are not transmitted to the public, said a representative of the Institute for Problems of Safe Development of Nuclear Power of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPSDNP RAS), TASS reported on March 9.

“The ARMS site of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, which we have been monitoring since the beginning, has not been working for more than a week. The ARMS system itself is likely to be functional, sensors are functioning, they measure, but the visualization of this data – the transfer of data to the server and presentation on the site – does not function, “ said a representative of the institute.

IPSDNP RAS is the world’s leading center studying issues of radiation safety. The institute also played one of the key roles in the investigation of the Chernobyl accident.

An automated radiation monitoring system has been set up at the plant, which monitors the degree of contamination within 30 kilometers around the plant.
