Expert: Fake news in Western media create a favorable background for provocations

08.02.2022, Moscow.

The Western media reports on the alleged Russian invasion of Ukraine create a background of information for the escalation of the conflict, political scientist and senior lecturer at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation Igor Semenovskiy said in a commentary for Rossa Primavera News Agency.

The information background created by the Western media “contributes to the fact that any, even unintentional exchanges of fire can lead to the fact that the troops will start to commit aggressive actions,” the expert said commenting on the Western media reports about the beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Such actions can be considered an information provocation, but at the same time we cannot exclude provocations of another kind. “There may be provocations with civilians, there may be provocations with drones, there may be provocations with hit armored vehicles,” the expert explained, also pointing to the possibility of direct shelling, similar to the 2008 Georgian aggression against South Ossetia.

“The situation is such that anything can be expected. From information [provocations], to drones and armored vehicles, up to direct shelling of the population,” he stressed.

In addition, one can say that the organization of conflict situations at the time of the Olympic Games has become a peculiar style of the Western instigators, the expert noted. The West is trying by all means to blur the positive image of the Olympics held by the geopolitical rival and is trying to create a “negative background. It is also blocking the news [about the Olympics] with its own newsbreaks.”

On February 5, Bloomberg stated that Russia had launched a military invasion of Ukraine and announced a live broadcast from the scene. After a while, the material was removed, and the editors apologized for publishing erroneous data.

On February 6, Bild published data allegedly provided by German intelligence about Russia’s plan to occupy Ukraine.
