The US is pushing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to act to his own detriment by taking a leading role in the implementation of the anti-Russian sanctions, according to an editorial of the Essence of Time newspaper.
On January 25, the Bild German newspaper reported that Washington encourages Germany to take a leading role in the blockade of raw materials supplies, including the launch of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, and efforts to identify targets for personal sanctions.
The US suggests that the new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz should shoot himself in the foot. While Angela Merkel was masterly in maneuvering between Moscow and Washington to defend German national interests over decades, Scholz is likely to bend to the US soon.
According to Bild, the new sanctions the US proposed to its allies would affect export of raw materials and weapons from Russia; the expected damage to the Russian Federation would amount to $50 billion. According to Bild, these were the plans CIA Director William Burns proposed in Berlin two weeks ago.
The US suggests that trade ways and “supply lines” should be blocked for Russia along with raw materials and weapons supplies. Also, the personnel of Russian diplomatic missions in the Western states is to be reduced.
Berlin assured the US that in case of invasion of Ukraine Russian gas would not be supplied by Nord Stream 2. However, the leaders of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Chancellor’s Office are fundamentally unprepared to reject the gas pipeline, which resulted in irritation in Washington.
