Turkey voices unfeasible conditions for its withdrawal from Syria. Opinion

Turkey is trying to cover up the occupation of northern Syria by non-fulfillment of certain conditions by Syria, the Rossa Primavera News Agency editorial reads.

On December 24, the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet, citing “competent sources in the Turkish government,” published four conditions for the withdrawal of the Turkish army from Syria.

They include the need to negotiate a new constitution that takes into account the rights of all citizens, the creation of a free election institution and the formation of a legitimate government after the elections.

In addition, Turkey requires the elimination of terrorist organizations that threaten the territorial integrity of the Republic of Turkey near the Turkish-Syrian border. These organizations are Kurdish People’s Defense Units (YPG) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Turkey considers affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and recognized as terrorist organizations.

“If these four conditions are met, the reasons for the presence of Turkish troops on Syrian territory will disappear,” the newspaper quoted sources in the Turkish government as saying.

The first three points are connecting its [Turkey’s] presence to ostensibly agreed-upon requirements. These are paragraphs of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 on Syria, which say nothing about Turkey.

The Turks pass it off as binding conditions by the UN, the implementation of which they allegedly control.

At the same time, if you assess the situation on these points, it becomes clear that they will not be fulfilled any time soon. So far, no one is eager to adopt a new constitution for Syria: neither Russia, nor Iran, nor Turkey. Everyone understands that they will have to make certain concessions, which so far the parties are not satisfied with.

The only current opportunity to seriously change the situation is a US withdrawal from Iraq. This would greatly shake the balance of power in the region. If they withdraw from Syria as well, serious changes will begin. Under such conditions, the capabilities of the other participants in the process will also change, and new concessions to each other will become possible.

Turkey’s last demand is completely unfeasible. The elimination of the “Kurdish threat” is a standard Turkish demand, which in this form is unacceptable.

So, altogether, these conditions are impossible to fulfill and only disguise Turkey’s occupation of northern Syria.
