The detention of Belarusian opposition activist Raman Protasevich caused panic and hysteria among the Polish security services, Polish political analyst and journalist Mateusz Piskorski said on June 6 on the Belarus 1 TV channel.
On May 23, Ryanair’s flight made an emergency landing in Minsk. As a result, the Belarusian authorities arrested Protasevich, who was on board. This caused a sharp reaction of the West.
Following the arrest of the Belarusian opposition activist, the heads of the Polish security services held an emergency meeting, which may be associated with the discussion of Protasevich, the political analyst believes.
“A very logical question arises: why the Polish security services, including the Polish counterintelligence service, gather such meetings, why they were in a certain panic and hysterics immediately after the arrest of Protasevich. The only possible answer is that they are afraid of something that Protasevich may say in the near future,” Piskorski said.
The political analyst believes that the authorities will not reveal sensitive information related to Protasevich, but the Polish citizens have the right to know why the fate of the Belarusian opposition activist so much concerns the security services. The publicist also noted that Protasevich’s story about Poland’s financing “Belarusian House” in Warsaw could cause outrage among the Polish citizens and should attract the attention of investigative authorities.
“After Roman Protasevich’s statements it would be advisable to launch investigation, because he speaks, among other things, about certain corrupt schemes that exist among those who created the ‘Belarusian House,’ and he also hints that these schemes can be used by some Polish politicians and officials,” the publicist believes.
He also added that in the described situation Poland is only an executor of the plans that are created in Washington. Therefore, the Polish authorities are forced to pay for projects that are contrary to national interests. At the same time, in exchange for such actions, Poland can only get certain hopes for privatization of the Belarusian economy. But even these hypothetical benefits concern only individual representatives of the Polish elite, the political scientist noted.
