Ukrainian army makes "human shields" from civilian cars at checkpoints near Gorlovka and Elenovka

25.04.2016, Donbass.

Ukrainian military began to make “human shields” out of civilian cars at the checkpoints near Gorlovka and in the south of Donbass, Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Deputy Defense Minister Eduard Basurin stated during his briefing in the press center of Donetsk News Agency yesterday.

Towards the evening, Ukrainian military positioned at the checkpoints near Mayorsk town and Elenovka village are delaying the process of crossing the demarcation line by civilians under various pretexts. The military makes a ‘human shield’ of the civilians by placing civilian cars around their checkpoints,” the representative of DPR Defense Ministry said.

As Eduard Basurin explained in his interview with Donetsk News Agency, numerous positions of the Ukrainian army, from which the shelling of the DPR front-line territories is regularly conducted, are located in the immediate vicinity of the Ukrainian checkpoints. “The accumulation of civilians allows the Ukrainian side easy to shell the DPR positions knowing that the Republican Armed Forces will not open returned fire if the civilians are in the danger zone“, Eduard Basurin said.

As DPR Defense Ministry previously reported, during the past week the Ukrainian command redeployed more than 60 military vehicles, including multiple launch rocket systems, artillery, tanks, and armored vehicles on Gorlovka and Mariupol directions.
