The NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999 showed that international law does not exist, said Slavenko Terzić, academician of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, professor, Serbian ambassador to Russia from 2013 to 2019, speaking at the press center of Russia Today on March 23.
“NATO bombed many civilian objects … it (the alliance) bombed hospitals, … bombed almost all bridges … bombed oil refineries, bombed railroads, bombed hospitals, schools,” Terzic recalled.
The former ambassador recalled that the North Atlantic Alliance had dropped 37,000 cluster bombs on Yugoslavia, using more than 1,150 aircraft.
“This is a very dangerous precedent, it is proof that international law does not exist, it finally showed that all international organizations, especially the UN, were just a tool of US policy,” the former Serbian ambassador to Russia stressed.
On March 24, 1999, NATO launched air strikes on the territory of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia because of an armed confrontation between Albanian separatists from the Kosovo Liberation Army and the army and police of Serbia.
The alliance’s attack on the sovereign country lasted 78 days. NATO dropped rockets and cluster bombs on civilians, killing more than 2,500 people, including 87 children.
