Lavrov: The goal of the West is to restore the unipolar world order and contain Russia and China

23.03.2022, Moscow.

The West seeks to revive a unipolar world – this is its ultimate goal. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated this in his speech at MGIMO on March 23.

According to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Western countries seek to restrain the development of any of their competitors and maintain a unipolar world. Lavrov is confident that after Russia, it may be China’s turn.

“There is no doubt that one of the rules that the West wants to implement is the containment of any competitor. Now here is Russia, China is announced to be next, or in parallel all this will happen. And the goal of the world order based on these rules is nothing less than the complete revival of a unipolar world,” Lavrov said.

The Russian high-ranking diplomat stressed that everything that is happening in the world does not concern Ukraine directly. It is about world restructuring, the formation of a new world order.

Lavrov explained that in recent years the West has excluded the concept of international law from its political vocabulary, replacing it with demands to follow the established world order. At the same time, the West has never voiced the rules of this world order, because they are not fixed. Each new situation changes them to suit a small circle of Western countries.

The diplomat stressed that these rules are “written by a narrow circle of Western countries, which then pass it off as the ultimate truth and require everyone to comply with these rules.

The head of the Foreign Ministry explained what role the West attributed to Ukraine in its attempts to restrain Russia.

“The goal was to contain Russia, as well as to contain any other country that shows even weak sign of independence on the world stage. As far as the Russian direction of NATO policy is concerned, Ukraine was chosen as a tool to suppress Russian independence,” Lavrov explained.

On the morning of February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the citizens of Russia, announcing the start of a military special operation in Ukraine. The military operation was launched after a request from the heads of the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics for assistance in repelling attacks by the Ukrainian army. The special operation is aimed at forcing the Ukrainian army and the Kiev government to peace, as well as the denazification and demilitarization of Ukraine.

According to the Russian leader, Western countries forced Russia to resort to the full and final protection of civilians in Donbas by its aggressive anti-Russian policy and attempts to set Ukrainian authorities and nationalist battalions to finally suppress the resistance of residents of Donbass and eleminate the Russian-speaking population in the DPR and LPR.

Putin also appealed to the Ukrainian army, suggesting that they lay down their arms and not put up any resistance. According to Putin, all servicemen of the Ukrainian army who lay down their weapons will be able to go home to their families in peace. This proposal does not apply to radical nationalist battalions in the Ukrainian army. The leader of Russia also appealed to foreign forces, demanding not to interfere in Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

“Whoever tries to interfere with us, especially to create threats for our country, for our people, must know that Russia’s response will be immediate and will lead you to consequences that you have never faced before in your history. We are prepared for any development of events. All necessary decisions in this regard have been taken,” Putin said.
