Greek scholar talks about new wave of McCarthyism over stance toward Ukraine

23.03.2022, Athens.

Greece is entering a period of a new McCarthyism, its citizens are trying to be divided on the basis of their attitude to what is happening in Ukraine, said a famous Greek scholar, one of the prominent experts on Turkey Professor Ioannis Masis, militaire.gr reports on March 23.

Masis said that people trying to analyze honestly what is happening in Ukraine are being threatened and humiliated. He himself is being threatened, the professor said.

“We are entering a period of a new McCarthyism. We are entering a new civil war, they are trying to divide us,” he said.

Masis said that external forces have emerged that are trying to divide the Greek people, and he called for that division to be prevented. He recalled that democracy demands that all points of view be heard, even if some are wrong.

It should be noted that Professor Masis headed the department of Turkology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. After the start of the Russian military special operation in Ukraine, he was often asked to give his point of view on what was happening. The professor spoke about the Azov battalion fighters (organization banned in the Russian Federation) and their symbols, and also spoke against arms deliveries to Ukraine.

According to the Union of Magazine and Electronic Press Journalists (ESPIT), journalist Thomas Sideris also faced threats after his radio documentary about the Nazis of Azov (organization banned in the Russian Federation) was released.

The musicians of the Athens Symphony Orchestra and artists of the National Opera were harassed by politicians after they refused to participate in the anti-Russian campaign.
