Russia will have to come to terms with the Soviet legacy in the face of major challenges, because an anti-Soviet card will be played against it, philosopher, political scientist, and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan stated on July 10 during the Conversation with a Sage program on the Zvezda radio channel.
“If Russia is preparing for major challenges, it will inevitably have to rethink the Soviet legacy in one way or another… [It is important issue] how exactly how to adopt it, to what extent, in what variation, and using which figures, whether significant or insignificant… There is no other option, for an anti-Soviet counter-card against Russia will be at play,” Kurginyan said.
The philosopher recalled that, initially, many Russians, including liberals, believed that Europe would cooperated with them. However, in Kurginyan’s view, the better they spoke English, the more they remained alien to the West.
The political scientist believes that now, observing a significant shift to the right among global elites, pro-Western circles in Russia are eager to play a nationalist-oriented card, hoping it will gain traction in the West.
“At first, Russian elites addressed the West saying ‘We are like you, we are liberals’; people like Yegor Gaidar [Russian economist and politician from the 1990s, during the Boris Yeltsin era responsible for total destruction of Soviet industry – translator’s note] and the like. Now, they say, ‘We are like you, we are far-right.’ But no matter which guise is used, that makes the West sick, and the Western elites views them [Russian elites] as outsiders,” Kurginyan noted.
In this context, Essence of Time‘s leader pointed to the fate of the White émigrés. According to him, for Russians who ended up in the West [after the Great October Socialist Revolution], the issue quickly came to a head: either a deep collaboration with the CIA or a life as a rentier at best, or a taxi driver at worst.
The political scientist emphasized that the myth about communists enslaving other people, in reality, turned out to be a long-standing narrative portraying the entire Russian people as the oppressor. Russians are perceived as communists regardless of how often they declare their anti-communism views.
Kurginyan recalled the World Anti-Communist League (WACL) and other organizations established in the past, where anti-communism was essentially synonymous with an anti-Russian agenda. The political scientist is convinced that this lies at the heart of the game around Ukraine.
The leader of the Essence of Time movement emphasized that Ukraine understands: the more it embraces fascism, the more it fulfills the mandate of “very influential forces” to push Europe towards accepting the fascist ideology.
“Ukraine must become a carrier for spreading fascism throughout Europe, by any means possible. ‘The Russians have attacked Ukraine, therefore they will attack you, too!’ They [the Ukrainian circles] must constantly scream: ‘Since they attacked us, they will attack you as well,'” Kurginyan said.
The political scientist noted that this logic leads to a call for Western society to defend itself, and defense requires money and conservative ideologies. In Kurginyan’s view, these ideologies rapidly transform into ideologies advocating the resurrection of Europe’s fascist leaders.
