Kurginyan: New type of war requires Russia’s scientific tradition to be restored

29.07.2026, Aleksandrovskoye.

The new contour of war demands that Russia must restore and build up its military and technological power, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, political scientist and philosopher Sergey Kurginyan said on July 10 on the Conversation with a Sage program on Radio Zvezda.

According to the political scientist, the direct role of drones in the future of the armed forces is still grossly overestimated, because “a glider with a grenade attached to it” cannot work without space-based and other high-technology systems.

It began as a sort of a gliding club with F-1 grenades, but today it is multi-ton explosives and a really advanced control system,” Kurginyan said.

At the same time, the political scientist stressed that a key thing was demonstrated: that a war can be waged without people or with their minimal involvement, and this is exactly what Europe wants as it is reluctant to sacrifice Europeans for Ukraine. Meanwhile, the European defense sector can produce any kinds of devices with advanced electronics to implement new technological forms of war.

Kurginyan noted that today such devices are in the air, then they appear in water, and further they can take the form of tanks and other systems. He believes that the progress towards a new contour of war is going really fast.

As for the new contour of war, everything is determined by the revival and building up of our military and technological power. We suffered a severe setback in this,” the political scientist said.

The leader of Essence of Time reminded that for a long time we had a dominating concept that Russia will sell oil to buy everything else due to a global market. However, according to him, we will not be able to buy anything. Russia prepared for too long to integrate into Europe and adopt its standards, and now this concept has to be canceled.

Kurginyan referred to the experience of the period after the Civil War when people “from the grassroots” went to Moscow to study while the Russian professors refused to leave and continued working.

As an example the political scientist mentioned physicist Pyotr Kapitsa, whom his colleague Ernest Rutherford offered all he needed for work in London and the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge University, but Kapitsa returned because the USSR offered better opportunities for science.

The leader of Essence of Time stressed that Lenin, Stalin, and other Soviet leaders, with their hard-line policy, had a fantastic passion for technical progress. He referred to the example of the GOELRO plan (the first Soviet nation-wide electric power project).

The philosopher also believes that the importance of the “philosophers’ ships” is seriously overestimated. According to him, those who left were not chemists or engineers, but philosophers forgotten almost by everyone after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

This factor of disappearing philosophers… it is bad, we should not have done that, but still we seriously overestimate it. But everything technological remained, and the Soviet authorities did their best to keep them,” Kurginyan said.

However, according to the political scientist, now it will be more difficult to restore and develop the scientific tradition in Russia, and teachers need to be prepared to this end. Over the past forty year the teachers that we had before either have retired or are not in their best shape, and after them we had a gap in continuity.
