By strengthening India against China, the USA may create a new geopolitical rival

02.06.2026, New Delhi.

The United States wants to use India to defeat China, but cooperation with it could turn New Delhi into a new dangerous rival for Washington, Rossa Primavera News Agency‘s India Desk notes.

On May 30, speaking in Delhi, the US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor listed the achievements of US-India cooperation. At the end of his speech, he let slip what the US actually needs India for. Gor said that together, the US and India will be able to combat the growing influence of China.

In fact, it is not just about combating influence, but about fighting China itself, which has clearly become the main adversary of the United States, as Washington already openly states in its strategic documents.

Essentially, the US economy has already lost to the Chinese economy, which has taken first place in goods production. And now Washington needs a major ally to cope with Beijing’s sharply increased power.

Here, India fits many criteria. First and foremost, by population. Several years ago, India already surpassed China. It is home to nearly 1.5 billion people, and its population continues to grow, while China has moved to stagnation and certain decline.

Second, the economy. India’s economy is significantly inferior to China’s, but it is already one of the largest economies in the world and continues to grow rapidly. In addition, there is a huge number of poor or even destitute people who are ready to work for very low wages, something that is already quite rare in China. Therefore, India’s growth potential is very substantial, and many US and Western companies in general have plans to move production from China to India.

And importantly, India itself sees China as a rival for influence in the region. New Delhi is very wary of Beijing’s growing influence. Moreover, relations between the countries are quite tense due to several territorial disputes, and only recently has there been some warming in relations.

This makes India an attractive partner for the US to use as a battering ram against China.

For Washington, however, there are two major problems here. First and foremost, India is not at all eager to become such a battering ram and move to serious confrontation with China, preferring to maintain normal relations with it.

And second, if the US seriously invests in India, shares technology with it, and develops its economy as a counterweight to China, then in the end it will grow a second China out of it – a new global rival for itself.
