Kurginyan explains why it is important to comprehend the experience of achieving victory in Great Patriotic War

The victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War was so tremendous that the absolute significance of this event far outweighs any considerations related to the existing domestic and international political situation, political scientist, philosopher, and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said in his video address on May 9 dedicated to the Victory Day.

Say, you are celebrating a certain event. And it exists as a historical event, an accomplishment, as something with its own value. So when you are celebrating this event, can one say that it does not matter at all what is currently going on in the world or that you do not care at all about the current historical development? Of course not. Does this mean that everything is determined by the global and domestic situation: the current global and domestic situation defines the way of celebration? Also not,” the political scientist said.

Believers celebrate certain sacred events while the world goes through many changes, and these sacred events are not devalued by the nature of the world in which they are celebrated, the analyst noted. The same is true with the celebration of the Soviet people’s Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Sergey Kurginyan added. According to him, this event is so grandiose “that the reality surrounding it now cannot do anything about it – it is what it is.

“This is the greatest event in human history. It is a true victory of absolute good over absolute evil. ‘Like two hostile, different poles…’ as it was sung in the great Soviet song ‘The Sacred War.’ This is a sacred Victory,” Sergey Kurginyan emphasized.

This is both a Soviet and a Russian victory, and since it is a Russian victory, it is the most striking testimony to the power, scale, and metaphysical significance of the people themselves, the philosopher said.

“If a people could even once accomplish something like that, then it was a people possessing the required vision, the required potential. In the future, nothing can completely undo this. All this is true, and there is nothing that can negate this fact. We can only deepen our understanding of Victory, and we are obliged to do so, because otherwise the processes [in Russia] may deteriorate into the late Brezhnevism [the period of stagnation that began during the time of Leonid Brezhnev – translator’s note], and I can clearly see how everything is gradually developing in this direction,” the political scientist said.

Late Brezhnevism, which, perhaps, in itself was not so bad, ended up with the disintegration of the Soviet Union, and this disintegration was caused by certain processes within Brezhnevism, the political scientist recalled.

“As Shakespeare’s Hamlet said: This is the imposthume of much wealth and peace, // That inward breaks, and shows no cause without// Why the man dies.So we must understand where it comes from – from this ‘imposthume.’ Recreating it, especially in a situation where everything is much more acute than it was in 1985, is hardly worth it,” Sergey Kurginyan noted.

The political scientist stated that today, the entire Russian society, the entire current elite, and all the main domestic megatrends (social, cultural, and others) easily deteriorate into something strongly reminiscent of late Brezhnevism, and this, in his opinion, is unacceptable in the situation when everything is so dire.

“It is unacceptable to repeat not entirely truthful pathos in a moment when the truth is most needed. Therefore, it is essential, first and foremost, to deepen our understanding of whom exactly the Soviet Union defeated [in the Great Patriotic War] and why it defeated them in that specific way; what the Soviet Union was. And, secondly, having repeatedly stated that the absolute nature of this event far outweighs the considerations associated with the current domestic and international political situation, the state of the world, and everything else, this state of the world also needs to be discussed. It is impossible to completely exclude it from understanding what this celebration means,” the political scientist concluded.
