The head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, unexpectedly initiated a normalization of relations between Ukraine and Georgia. This raises suspicion that Georgian territory is being planned for use in drone strikes against Russia, Rossa Primavera News Agency‘s Middle East Desk notes.
Zelensky, on his own initiative, met with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on May 4 on the sidelines of the European Political Community meeting. Yet just six months ago, the head of the Kiev regime accused the head of government of seeking to “betray” Georgia to Russia and imposed sanctions on him.
The meeting took place with the participation of the foreign ministers of Georgia and Ukraine, Maka Bochorishvili and Andrey Sibiga. The conversation was brief, what is called “on foot,” but the footage shows that Zelensky is speaking very actively.
Sibiga called the meeting historic. He stated that Ukraine is ready to open a new page in relations with Georgia. The minister also announced plans to meet with his Georgian colleague in Chisinau on the sidelines of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe meeting, which will take place on May 14-15.
Bochorishvili also commented on this meeting. She explained this by saying that Georgia is of interest to many due to its geographical location.
“The context in which the Ukrainian side is becoming more active is Georgia’s role in the context of transport infrastructure and the needs of the states of our wider neighborhood,” said the head of the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
According to her, many countries seeks to establish closer relations with Georgia because the country is a logistics hub. She suggested that Ukraine wanted normalization of relations, being interested in alternative routes for transit.
Relations between the two countries have recently been at a very low level. A vivid reflection of this was the fact that in March 2022, Ukraine recalled its ambassador to Georgia, Igor Dolgov. The reason was Georgia’s refusal to join anti-Russian sanctions and send mercenaries to Ukraine. Only in January 2026 did Zelensky appoint a new Ukrainian ambassador to Georgia — Mikhail Brodovich, which can be considered the beginning of a warming of relations.
Bochorishvili’s version that Ukraine needed transit through Georgia seems implausible, as economic relations between the countries have been maintained. There are no common borders between the countries, but there is ferry service across the Black Sea. And this did not stop Kiev from spoiling relations with Tbilisi in recent years.
The only explanation for Zelensky’s recent steps is seen here as Ukraine wanting to transfer through Georgia something it had not transferred before: something that requires the approval of the authorities. This is precisely what raises suspicion that the issue is about attacks on Russia from Georgian territory.
Previously, Georgia showed prudence. Kobakhidze repeatedly stated that the country was being tried to be drawn into a conflict with Russia, but he would not allow it. Whether this position will change can be seen from the statements of the parties.
