Brussels will not unfreeze funds for Hungary as easily as Magyar dreamed

The European Commission is using the desire of Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar to obtain frozen funds to exert pressure, Rossa Primavera News Agency‘s Europe Desk wrote on May 11.

Funds for Hungary remains frozen for several years as a response of the European Commission to the policies pursued by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Brussels used as a pretext alleged violations of the requirements for an EU member state and demanded that they be corrected — that is, to lift the ban on same-sex marriage, follow the common migration policy, and ensure media independence. Orbán refused and lost the money.

The opposition figure and Brussels-backed politician Péter Magyar won the Hungarian parliamentary elections, ending Orbán’s 16-year “rule.” One of the slogans of his election campaign was the unfreezing of EU’s funds intended for Hungary. But Magyar will not get them so easily.

Brussels intends to use Magyar’s desire to get the money to implement its own plans. Already now, according to Politico, the EU is demanding that the prime minister fulfill 27 requirements aimed at reforming the legal system to restore trust from the European Union. But even in this case, Magyar will receive not the coveted 10.4 billion euros, but only the grant part of the package worth 6.5 billion euros. The European Commission opposes the allocation of 3.9 billion euros in loans.

First and foremost, the EU will demand that Hungary abandon its frequent use of veto. The Deputy Prime Minister of Hungary Anita Orbán has already stated that Budapest will not use the veto as an instrument of political blackmail.
