Kurginyan: KGB’s elites devised a plan to conquer Europe through the disintegration of the USSR

29.12.2025, Moscow.

Already in the 1970s, the KGB elites believed that Russia must be modernized and integrated into Europe in order to seize control over it, philosopher, political scientist, and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on December 13 on the Right to Know program on the TVC channel.

The political scientist recounted that his father headed a department at the Moscow Regional Pedagogical Institute, where KGB officers, including such high-ranking Soviet intelligence officials as Semyon Tsvigun, often defended their dissertations during the Soviet era. “And I had the opportunity to observe all this closely,” Kurginyan emphasized.

“Already in the 1970s, the KGB believed that the only reasonable strategy was to imitate democracy in Russia, get rid of the constituent units with excess demographic rates, join Europe, and conquer Europe later,” the philosopher said, expressing the position of the KGB elite.

Meanwhile, in private conversations as early as the late 1970s, high-ranking Soviet intelligence officers, who were supposed to defend Soviet doctrine, sharply criticized their superiors. They certainly had valid reasons for this, the political scientist noted.

“KGB officers who were yearning for modernization had a legitimate reason for rebuking a terribly exhausted and sleepy Communist party,”  Kurginyan pointed out. Some in KGB’s elites viewed this fatigue as an archaic feature.

The KGB elite believed that the country must be modernized and join the West. The political scientist emphasized that by the end of the 1970s, during which the pipeline to West Germany was built, “there were no longer any members of the Politburo who opposed the idea of Germany’s reunification.”

The philosopher pointed out that the course toward joining Europe originated under Otto Kuusinen, a high-ranking Communist International figure and member of the Presidium of the CPSU Central Committee, “was strengthened under Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov, and completely unfolded in the final years” of the Soviet Union.
