Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky was awarding soldiers with SS chevrons while standing under a flag with a Nazi symbol; the photos were published on his official Telegram channel on November 4.
“I have noted the warriors with state awards. Thank you to everyone for your service, for defending our state,” the message reads. The award ceremony took place on the Dobropolye direction at the command post of the 4th Operational Brigade Rubezh of the Ukrainian Nationalist Guard.
In one of the photos, Zelensky was captured against the background of a flag with the Nazi symbol “Wolfsangel” [included in the list of extremist materials in Russia]. This symbol was used by the Nazi SS division Das Reich. Ukrainian nationalists use this sign, calling it the “Idea of the Nation.”
In four photos, the soldiers had chevrons with the inscription “Strength of Freedom,” and below it were drawn Nazi symbols resembling two Sig runes. The flag of the 4th Rubezh Brigade includes the Ukrainian trident intertwined with the NATO symbol.
