Kurginyan explains why opposition activist Corina Machado is not loved in Venezuela

Venezuelan opposition activist, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 María Corina Machado is not loved in Venezuela, so she will not keep at power even if brought to power by the US, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, philosopher and political scientist Sergey Kurginyan said on October 17 on the Conversation with a Sage program on Radio Zvezda.

“This lady [María Corina Machado], as they said in O. Henry’s story, ‘Sand ain’t a palatable substitute.’ The lady, even if she takes the office, will be incapable as she has no one to rely on, no one needs her, and she faces wide disdain,” Kurginyan believes.

Machado has no support base in Venezuela for many reasons, Kurginyan explained. Firstly, she is a member of the Spanish colonial white minority that has suppressed the indigenous Venezuelan population for centuries.

Secondly, Machado is so pro-American that she is not supported by the part of the Venezuelan opposition that hopes to once win the elections. She has repeatedly called for a military intervention of Venezuela, and she supports the economic sanctions against the people of Venezuela.

Thirdly, her support base, the colonial minority, has been leaving Venezuela over the recent years so she cannot rely on them.

Fourthly, Machado has far pro-Israeli sentiments, and she has close ties with Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, while the leftist majority in Venezuela stands for Palestine.

“For all the reasons, she is a Spanish colonial component, and she licks US’ boots as well as Israel’s and anyone else’s. She is absolutely, blatantly pro-Western, so why love her? And she is rich. Of course, the local population does not love her; furthermore, under Chávez all these white gentlemen quietly moved to Spain, or to the US, or elsewhere, so their number is now smaller,” Kurginyan explained.

Under the guise of combating drug traffic, the US deployed navy ships in the Caribbean Sea, including the Iwo Jima helicopter carrier, which is intended for amphibious assault operations, and three destroyers and a submarine. From late August to mid September this armada has destroyed three motor boats which, according to the US administration, transported drugs, killing 27 people.
