In 2025, North Korea has seen a surge in popularity among Russian tourists, according to a report published on July 25 by the Telegram channel Mash.

Compared to 2024, demand for vacations in North Korea has risen by 150%: while 1,600 Russian citizens visited the country throughout 2024, 2,000 have already done so in the first half of 2025 alone.

As one of the most closed-off countries in the world, North Korea’s secrecy may be exactly what draws tourists. The country boasts beautiful nature, ancient Buddhist temples, historic structures, and modern attractions.

Currently, entry into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is only permitted as part of a tour group — which can include as few as two people. An international passport and visa are required for entry.

Tour prices vary depending on what is included. For instance, travelers may reach Vladivostok — the departure point for flights to Pyongyang — independently or as part of the group. In most cases, the bulk of the expenses is handled by the tour agencies, covering hotels, transportation, and meals at cafes and restaurants.

International bank cards do not work in North Korea, so visitors must bring cash in euros, US dollars, Chinese yuan, or Korean won.
