Acting Prime Minister of Thailand Phumtham Wechayachai warned of the risk that the ongoing border conflict with Cambodia could escalate into full-scale war, Agence France-Presse reported on July 25.
According to the acting prime minister, Thailand has made efforts to find a compromise with Cambodia. For now, the conflict remains limited to isolated clashes, but further escalation could trigger the start of a war.
Military hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia erupted on the morning of July 24 due to rising tensions over a border dispute. Cambodia launched artillery strikes on Thai territory, including attacks on civilian targets using Grad multiple rocket launchers. In response, Thailand carried out an airstrike on Cambodian military positions. Casualties have been reported on both sides, including both wounded and dead, among them civilians.
